“The Hong Kong College of Emergency Physicians Limited was incorporated under the Companies Ordinance on 13 February 1996. All the Consultant Emergency Physicians were invited to be subscribers to the new College. Dr Chin-Hung Chung became the Founding President of the College. “An informal visit was arranged with Sir David Todd, President of the HKAM, on 13 March 1996. Sir David suggested that formal endorsements from the four Colleges (Anaesthesiologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physicians and Surgeons) on the Training Programme of the HKCEP should be sought before formal submission to the HKAM for college recognition.”

“By August 1996, we had received formal written endorsements of the College Training Programme from the colleges of Anaesthesiologists, Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physicians and Surgeons. Following this, the College President and Secretary, Dr Chor-chiu Lau, had a meeting with HKAM President Sir David Todd on 4 September 1996, and the formal application to the HKAM was submitted on 9 September 1996.”

“Dr CH Chung, Dr TW Wong and Dr WL Cheung later met with Prof. Allan Chang, Chiarman of the HKAM Education Committee, and suggestions for clarification of the M&A and Training Programme were received.”

“At its meeting on 30 September 1996, the College Council also discussed the issue of adopting the name “The Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine” as suggested by some HKAM council members, in order to avoid confusion with the Hong Kong College of Physicians. The Council finally concluded that the suggested name was appropriate for the college.”

“On 13 November 1996, our President sent a letter to Dr David Fang, the new President of the Academy, informing him that our name had been changed and that we had obtained the signatures of more than 50 HKAM Fellows requesting and Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to admit the HKCEM as an Academy college. THE HKAM EGM was held at the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital on 16 January 1997, when our College was duly admitted as the 15th constituent college of the HKAM.”
