Scope of Examination

 

  1. The Primary Examination on Emergency Medicine (PEEM) of the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine is an examination to assure proficient medical knowledge as imitative to emergency medicine training.
  2. The PEEM tests candidates with emphasis on applied clinical science for emergency medicine

 

Format of Examination

  1. The examination consists of ONE section of 100 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) in Single Best Answer (SBA) format (5-options-choose-1-best-answer)
  1. The duration of the examination is 2 hours
  1. The examination would be conducted in English

Award

    1. The examination is organized conjointly by the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine with the National University of Singapore.
    2. Successful candidates will be awarded certificates deeming them to have passed the Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine of Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine and the Master of Medicine (Emerg Med) Part A awarded by the National University of Singapore.

Application Procedure

Send the following documents on or before the deadline to:

Documents to be included in the application:

  1. Properly completed Application Form,
  2. Two recent photographs,
  3. Certified true copies of the certificate of medical qualifications and other relevant documents
    1. For candidates working in Hong Kong, all certified true copies of documents must be certified by the respective Training Supervisor or Consultant
    2. For candidates not working or residing in Hong Kong, photocopies of certificates and/or official translations (in English)* will be accepted only if they have been prepared and/or authenticated by the Medical Council of which you are registered and licensed to practice

    *Applicants must submit an authenticated translation if their official supporting documents are not in English or Chinese. A fresh ink stamp must be used to authenticate the copy or translation of the primary medical qualification.

  4. The cheque or bank remittance with the full amount of the fee paid by ‘Account Payee Only’ payable to ‘Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine’ if payment made by cheque/bank remittance

Refund Policy
  1. Applicants withdrawing from the PEEM must apply in prior writing to the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine. Candidates may be asked to provide evidence for their reason for withdrawal.
  2. Withdrawal prior to the closing date of the relevant examination application: 10% of the application fee as administrative charge will be levied.
  3. No refund will normally be made to candidates who withdraw from the examination after the closing date or fail to attend. No allowance will be made for postal or other delays.
  4. Special considerations may be granted for illness or some unforeseeable accidents. Supporting evidence (such as a medical certificate, medical or police report) must be presented in all cases and refund should be applied within 14 days of the examination. 10% of the application fee as administrative charge will be levied.
  5. Requests for refund under the following reasons will not be supported:
    1. Lack of preparedness or readiness for the examination
    2. Failure to arrange time away from work
    3. Inability to secure a visa or other travel documents required to attend the examination
  6. Applicants who have submitted their applications but subsequently found to be not eligible to sit for the examination will have their fee refunded after 10% of the examination fee has been levied as administrative charge.

 

Results
  1. The passing mark will be decided by a panel of expert examiners with scientific method of standard setting for each diet.
  2. Candidates will be informed of the results by post normally within 4 weeks after the examination
Appeal
  1. Appeal is defined by a request made by candidate to revise the decision of the result of the examination. Feedback is defined as a complaint or suggestion to the examination without the request to change the result.

 

  1. Candidates who wish to appeal or provide feedback about the process of the examination must do so in writing within 30 days of the examination. The submission must state the details of reason or argument.

 

  1. Appeals will be considered if they allege misadministration, bias or impropriety whether in the conduct or in the determination of the result of the examination. All the feedback will be seriously reviewed by the education committee. However, anonymous complaints will generally not be considered.

 

  1. Appeals disputing the academic judgment of the examiners will not be considered.

 

  1. A non-refundable administrative fee of 10% of the application fee would be levied for the appeal request. No fee will be applied to feedback.

 

  1. Examination candidates who make complaint or appeal in good faith will not be disadvantaged in the current and future examinations.

 

  1. The Education Committee or an appropriate committee as decided by the Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine will review the complaint, assemble preliminary evidence, request statements from relevant parties and conduct appropriate investigation on the issue.

 

  1. Candidates will be notified about the appeal result in writing.

 

 

 

Re-sit of examination

 

There is no limit on the number of attempts on PEEM

 

 

 

Improper conduct of examination candidates

 

  1. Candidates who are found to have improper conduct during an examination may be refused entry to the current or future examinations.

 

  1. Improper conducts include:
    1. Dishonestly obtaining or attempting to obtain entry to the examination by making false statements, using falsified documents, false claims about training experience, qualifications or eligibility for the examination.
    2. Obtaining or seeking to obtain unfair advantage during an examination, or inciting other candidate to do the same. Examples include:
      • Having on the person any material that would give advantage in an examination once the examination has commenced by any means including electronic devices.
      • Communicating or attempting to communicate with another person (another candidate or third party) once the examination has commenced, including passing information about the contents of any part of the examination to candidates in the same diet.
      • Refusing to follow the instruction given by the examiners or examination staff concerning the conduct of and procedure for the examination.
    3. Removing or attempting to remove from the examination any confidential material relating to the conduct of the examination.
    4. Obtaining or attempting to obtain confidential information concerning the examination from an examiner or examination official.
    5. Passing confidential information on the content of the examination to a third party.

 

  1. The list of improper conduct is not exhaustive and the College reserves the right to investigate and judge any potential case of improper conduct or behaviour during the examination.

 

  1. Candidates may be disqualified from the examination in case of serious misconduct after investigation by the College.

Infection Control

  1. Candidates are required to observe the infection control requirement of the examination venue.
  2. Candidates, who are confirmed or suspected of having infectious disease that may induce risk to the examiners and other candidates may not be allowed to sit for the examination. Candidates can choose to have refund or defer to the next diet.
  3. The Chief Examiner or the deputy would exercise the authority to implement the essential precautionary actions  in accordance to any prevalent disease outbreaks, including and not limited to, refusing candidates to sit for the examination due to infection control concern.
