MBChB (CUHK) 1992 President SIU Yuet Chung Axel |
Dear Fellows and Trainees,
Time flies as this is my second Presidential address. As said in my last presidential address, “Trainees are our future”. We endeavor to facilitate the growth of our new generation so that they can be the professional emergency physicians in future. We have enhanced the opportunity for them to learn and attend our professional examination. In 2019, we witnessed the first conjoint Primary Examination in Emergency Medicine with our Singaporean counterpart. It was not only allowing more opportunity for our trainee to attempt the examination, but also it could help to enhance the recognition of the examination to the other countries. We will pledge to explore the potential of further liaison in other professional examination with our partners.
In addition, the Emergency Medicine Trainee’s Network continued to prove their unique role, not only facilitating us to touch our trainee but also providing opportunity as an ambassador in emergency medicine. Since 2018, the Trainee’s Network closely liaised with our Taiwan colleagues. We had mutual exchange activities in our annual scientific meeting. Our delegates attended the Annual Scientific Meeting of Taiwan Society of Emergency Medicine in June and visited the emergency department of National Taiwan University Hospital and Far Eastern Memorial Hospital.
The implementation of e-portfolio system was proven to be a great success. Besides facilitating the trainees to document their training experience, trainers can easily monitor and give comment to individual trainee. It was now extended to CME capture for fellows. All fellows could capture CME points by means of the preset QR code and access their own CME record through the mobile app. Our successful experience has attracted the attention of other sister colleges and we are glad to share our experience with them.
We are also starting to show our important role in the international emergency medicine. Besides Dr. HO Hiu Fai worked as the Oversight and Liaison Officer in International Federation of Emergency Medicine, we had more than 25 fellows actively participated in various IFEM committees and special interest groups. Dr. Clara WU and I also represented Hong Kong to attend the Resuscitation Council of Asia and several fellows were nominated to join the different task force to prepare the Asian guidelines on BLS, ACLS and First Aid, etc.
Furthermore, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all the fellows who have received award in recognition to their contribution in emergency medicine, especially Dr. LAU Fei Lung who was awarded Fellow of International Federation of Emergency Medicine (FIFEM) to honor his life-time devoted effort in the establishment of Clinical Toxicology services in Hong Kong and the first Clinical Toxicology Subspecialty in Hong Kong under our college.
Last but not the least, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all retiring Council Members, Scientific Subcommittee Chairpersons and Training Supervisors. Their contributions were crucial to development of the specialty. Though they will not stay in the original position, their precious experience will benefit a lot to their successors. I would also like to send a special thanks to Ms. Sonia HUEN, our college Administrative Manager. Without her supervision, the council office will not be able to run so smoothly.
Finally, I wish to all our fellows and trainees can stand firm as a professional to conquer any challenges in future.
Your President
SIU Yuet Chung Axel
