Course Background

Being one of the International Training Centre under American Heart Association, Hong Kong College of Emergency Medicine has been providing resuscitation training in Hong Kong since 1991. We started to organise PALS course since Oct 2006.

The PALS Provider Course is designed for healthcare provider who either direct or participate in the management of respiratory and/or cardiovascular emergencies and cardiopulmonary arrest in pediatric patients, Pre-course preparation, didactic instruction, and active participation in learning stations, and simulated cases will be used to enhance the recognition and intervention of respiratory emergencies, shock and cardiopulmonary arrest.

The PALS Provider Course givers students the opportunity to acquire, practice and demonstrate proficiency in the assessment and management of critically ill pediatric patients. The goal is to improve outcomes for pediatric patients by preparing healthcare providers to effectively recognize and intervene in patients with respiratory emergencies, shock, and cardiopulmonary arrest by using high-performance team dynamics and high –quality individual skills.

Course Prerequisites

Students must prepare adequately to enable successful completion of the PALS Provider Course. This course does not teach BLS skills, interpretation of rhythm strips, or basic PALS pharmacology. Thus, before taking the course, students must already be proficient in the following:

– Performing child and infant BLS skills by using 2020 AHA Guidelines for CPR and ECC

– Reading and interpreting ECG rhythm strips

– Knowing basic resuscitation pharmacology

Course Completion Requirement
Students are required to complete the precourse self-assessment in the PALS Student Resources available at eLearning.heart.org. Each students must bring a printout of their score, which must be 70% or higher, to the PALS course.
Students must also attend and participate in all lessons of the course, pass all practical skills test, and pass the written MCQ examination of score at least 84%.

Intended Candidate
Personnel who are working in emergency, intensive care, critical care or acute departments/wards; emergency medical providers such as medical officers, nurses, emergency technicians, paramedics and other professionals who need to respond to a cardiovascular emergency in infants and children.
Course Pre-requisites

Candidates should possess AHA BLS certification or equivalent. Please send photocopy of AHA BLS certificate after online registration to College at course@hkcem.org.hk

Candidates without BLS certification are encouraged to join BLS Provider Course.
