Clinical Simulation Training Subcommittee

The Clinical Simulation Training subcommittee was established in 2011.
The subcommittee has grown to more than fifty members, all of whom are accredited trainers of Medical Simulation since its establishment. The subcommittee has been organizing the Two-day Simulation-based Workshop on “Clinical Performance at Emergency Medicine”, a training program mandatory for all trainees of HKCEM and funded by Hospital Authority. The objective of the workshops is to enhance our trainees’ clinical performance through scenario-based simulation training. Reducing errors, promoting the adoption of best practices and patients’ safety are our ultimate goals. The Hong Kong Jockey Club Innovative Learning Centre for Medicine (HKJCILCM) supported the program by providing high fidelity mannequins and a simulated environment milieu. Together with debriefings by experienced facilitators allow participants to experience learning under a safe and controlled environment in an interactive fashion. Through hands-on practice, learners develop skills including knowledge-in-action, procedures, decision-making, and effective communication.

“See one, do one, teach one” has characterized medical education for over 4,000 years. A paradigm shift from apprenticeship program that uses patients in hospitals as the primary elements of the “classroom” to a new model relying on simulation takes time and efforts. Last but not least, simulation provides a convenient and objective means of regular assessment of a doctor or nurse’s ability at or above an agreed standard.
